Ben Merkling, Psy.D., is a mental health counselor who is specializing in sport psychology. Dr. Merkling aims to help athletes enhance motivation, attention to the present moment, and coping with a variety of concerns, such as self-defeating thoughts/behaviors, stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, eating concerns, and more.
Experience, Education, and Training
Dr. Merkling was born and raised in the Twin Cities suburbs. After high school, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of St. Thomas before completing his Master’s degree and doctoral degree in counseling psychology at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Dr. Merkling has previously worked at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he enjoyed working with athletes through the university counseling centers. Dr. Merkling also has experience providing rehabilitation psychology.
Dr. Merkling played several different sports at a young age before deciding to focus on basketball. He played basketball throughout high school and was elected as a team captain during his senior year. He currently loves playing golf, shooting hoops, and introducing his son to a variety of sports.
Dr. Merkling completed his doctoral dissertation on exploring the effect of mindfulness meditation on Flow experiences and performance.
