Premier Sport Psychology is a rapidly growing private consulting practice based in Minneapolis, MN (continually rated one of the best places to live) that provides both performance-enhancement and mental health services to athletes and non-athletes of all ages, competition levels and performance. Located just outside of downtown Minneapolis, Premier Sport Psychology also contracts with several professional teams, Olympic teams (and individual competitors), the University of Minnesota Athletic Department (providing all “in-house” sport psychology services to the 750+ student-athletes), USA National Teams, the University of St. Thomas Athletic Department and a number of other universities and high schools in Minnesota and the Midwest. As a trusted collaborative care provider to many healthcare systems and physical therapists in Minnesota (Mayo Clinic, TRIA Orthopaedic Center, Twin Cities Orthopedics, etc.), our sport psychologists help provide support to athletes through their recovery and add an extra level of care in their rehabilitation and return to sport. In addition, we serve a broad spectrum of business owners, executives, leadership teams, and other business-related clientele in our consulting practice through our sister organizational consulting company, JSA Advising.
This position is designed for an individual who is highly motivated and interested in working as part of a sport psychology consulting practice (working with individual athletes from all competitive levels; youth to professional), in athletic departments, national team settings and possibly professional team settings. This candidate will likely combine clinical work, performance-enhancement and outreach with an athletic population.
Provide direct individual counseling and mental skills training to athletes; facilitate team meetings/team-building activities; provide leadership coaching/consultation to coaches; develop, promote and lead workshops and/or presentations to local, regional and/or national sport organizations/medical clinics, and/or athletic teams; conduct outreach and marketing ventures to grow new business and foster referral relationships. If interested and trained, become involved in business/industrial and organizational side of consulting practice (JSA Advising). If skilled, potential to assist in providing ADHD/LD assessments to student-athletes at the collegiate level and/or build out ADHD/LD assessment program within Premier Sport Psychology. Possible opportunities exist to have clinical rotations in collegiate or professional athletic settings and/or sports medicine organizations (based on availability and interest/skills). Participate in case management and consultation, business meetings, and professional development activities. Opportunity to receive up to 2 hours of supervision per week for candidates that are interested in a post-doctorate fellowship. Other duties as assigned (e.g., content development for website, workbooks, online coaching resources, assistance with administrative activities, etc.). Hours can be applicable toward licensure requirements as specified by the Minnesota Board of Psychology.
Qualifications and Skills
A Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical/Counseling/Educational/Industrial Organizational Psychology from an accredited institution of higher education is required. Specialized training in sport psychology (e.g., training, practicum, etc.) and/or AASP certification also highly preferred. Excellent clinical, presentation, communication and interpersonal skills is a must. Individuals must also be self-motivated, disciplined with a willingness to be a team player, creative, and willing to invest hard work in growing a sport psychology practice. Organizational skills, follow-through (with clients, staff and referral sources), respectfulness of boundaries, openness to feedback, and ability to work independently in a responsible and professional manner are all essential to this position. All candidates must possess an understanding of and strict adherence to the Minnesota Board of Psychology legal guidelines and American Psychiatric Association ethical guidelines.
Experience working with athletes of all ages (youth to professional) and all sports/fields of competition; specific experience working with youth, high school and college student-athletes, coaches, sports medicine staff and multidisciplinary treatment teams; training and experience in performance-related issues; training and experience working with injured athletes; ability to present to groups of all ages and backgrounds, and strong public speaking skills; crisis intervention experience; completion of APA-accredited internship.
Compensation is competitive, based on education and experience. Depending on performance and workload, bonus opportunities are available. Premier Sport Psychology will also provide benefits including health insurance, malpractice insurance, contributions to a retirement plan (after 1 year of tenure), as well as a flexible schedule.
