Matt Mikesell, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow specializing in sport and performance psychology. He works collaboratively with athletes to enhance the psychological tools necessary to thrive in sport, including confidence, motivation, awareness, and resilience. Dr. Matt values the athlete as a person, and approaches his work promote holistic growth.
Experience, Education, and Training
Dr. Matt is from Waukesha, Wisconsin and completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology at University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, followed by his Masters degree in Sport and Performance Psychology at University of Denver, and his doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas with an emphasis in sport and performance psychology. Dr. Matt has worked with individuals and groups at a variety of sites, including high schools, community clinics, college counseling centers, and athletic departments, including the University of North Texas Football Program. In his clinical work Dr. Matt uses an integration of multicultural, narrative, and acceptance/commitment therapies to help individuals gain awareness and develop skills to navigate distressing patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Dr. Matt believes in understanding the unique story and unique values that each person brings and strives to help individuals feel that they have someone in their corner. Creating a warm, caring, and authentic environment is critical to the work that Dr. Matt does. In his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his family, being outdoors, and being active.
License and Certifications
Dr. Matt is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. Dr. Matt is working towards his license and a Licensed Psychologist in Minnesota and as a Certified Mental Performance Coach.
Dr. Matt grew up playing any sport he could, but primarily enjoyed basketball, soccer, and track. Dr. Matt was a two-sport college athlete in soccer and track, and captained both teams. While living in Texas, Dr. Matt found CrossFit, and has been hooked from day one. You can currently find him using mental skills while at CrossFit competitions throughout the Midwest.
